Uncommonly Grand Beginnings

Uncommonly Grand

Welcome! My name is Spring and I write about experiences and adventures in Brantford and Brant County, and the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

I’ve lived and worked at Six Nations more than half my life. Over time, my work and lifestyle experiences led me to become a full time remote blogger and editor for a company based in the U.S. but my real passion is here at home.

In 2019 I took a one-year contract with the Six Nations Tourism team at the Chiefswood National Historic Site (the childhood home of Pauline Johnson – if you don’t know about her yet, there will be a post on here for that!) After that, I stayed on with the team as a Cultural Experiences Coordinator, planning group tours in and around the community including historic and outdoor sites, cultural activities, and meals with local flavor. And that’s where the real fun began!

With these roles, I saw all things amazing there were to see about my community and those around me, meeting and working with groups marketing everything from the outdoors to art; sustainable living to sports. And the food and drink scene is top choice!

At the outset of the pandemic, I was still a part of tourism, working from home doing online updates and keeping people informed. While brick-and-mortar operators were questioning the stability of their markets, I turned to the local trails and outdoor activities that didn’t require a strict set of WHO guidelines or a “passport” to enjoy.

Upon the official reopening for business, the opportunity to manage Chiefswood Park became a reality! From this location we did all we could to welcome Six Nations visitors and locals alike to enjoy paddling on the Grand, winter sports, cultural workshops, and outdoor events that brought back a sense of community.

Three years later, I’ve moved on to new projects and my passion for all things local remains. I want to tell the stories I don’t see elsewhere. Exploring for the sake of the experiences, using and supporting area trails and waterways, embracing slow travel and living intentionally, locally.

The articles here are for those looking for more than just a tour bus itinerary. There’s something special and unique about this underrated area you won’t find in a book, on a menu, or a map. And seeing and authentically experiencing that firsthand can be Uncommonly Grand.
